Why becoming carbon neutral matters to us

At People Business, we believe that businesses have a responsibility to look beyond profit and consider the impact they have on the world around them. That’s why we’re proud to say that we have measured our greenhouse gas emissions, taken steps to reduce them and offset our residual emissions through independently verified carbon credits.
This wasn’t about ticking a box or following a trend. It was about taking meaningful steps to reduce our environmental impact in practical, realistic ways, and recognising that even small businesses can make a difference.
Reducing our emissions first
For us, becoming carbon neutral started with asking an important question: how can we reduce the carbon we produce in the first place?
Like many organisations, the way we work has changed significantly over the past few years. Hybrid working became a permanent part of our business model and we quickly realised that it brought environmental benefits alongside flexibility and wellbeing benefits for our team.
With people working remotely for part of the week, we reduced commuting journeys, lowered energy usage in the office and significantly cut down unnecessary travel. We also embraced virtual meetings where appropriate, decreasing the need for long-distance business travel while still maintaining strong relationships with clients.
Alongside hybrid working, we looked carefully at our day-to-day operations and identified other areas where we could reduce waste and emissions, including:
- minimising paper usage through digital processes and documentation
- encouraging sustainable travel options where possible
- reducing unnecessary printing and office waste
- reviewing suppliers and services with sustainability in mind
- being more mindful of energy consumption in our office environment.
None of these changes alone transform the planet overnight. But collectively, they make a real difference and they help create a culture where sustainability becomes part of everyday decision-making.
Offsetting the emissions we can’t eliminate
Of course, no business can currently operate with zero emissions. There are always unavoidable elements, whether that’s heating, technology, business operations or essential travel.
That’s why, after reducing our emissions as much as possible, we partnered with a specialist carbon offsetting provider to offset the remaining carbon footprint of our business.
Carbon offsetting works by investing in certified environmental projects that either remove carbon from the atmosphere or prevent further emissions elsewhere in the world. These projects can include reforestation, renewable energy initiatives, habitat restoration and community sustainability programmes.
Importantly, we see offsetting as the final step, not the first. The priority must always be reducing emissions directly wherever possible, with offsetting used to balance the unavoidable remainder.
More than an environmental initiative
Becoming carbon neutral reflects the kind of organisation we want to be.
As a people-focused business, we know that our employees, clients and wider community increasingly care about sustainability and ethical business practices. Environmental responsibility is no longer a ‘nice to have’; it’s part of building a resilient, forward-thinking organisation.
We also recognise that sustainability is a journey, not a finish line. Becoming carbon neutral doesn’t mean the work is done. We’ll continue looking for ways to reduce our impact further, improve how we operate and make more environmentally conscious choices as our business evolves.
Small changes, collective impact
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned is that businesses don’t need to be huge global corporations to make positive environmental changes.
Practical actions such hybrid working, reducing waste, rethinking travel and offsetting responsibly all contribute to a wider collective impact.
We’re proud of the progress we’ve made so far and remain committed to playing our part in creating a more sustainable future.
